  • The last three years have seen the ruthlessly expansionist powerhouses like DLA, Eversheds and DWF really turn the screw on their rivals. They've pressurised firms like Halliwells and then taken the space left behind. Firms like Walker Morris and Dickinson Dees must wonder what they need to do in order to compete.

  • If I was a keoghs, walker morris, dixon dees level firm I'd go for volume work.
Once ABS really takes hold there's going to be a real squeeze on these firms that aren't the cheapest and don't have nationally recognised experts. Therefore it's sensible to do an Irwin Mitchell and realise your USP

  • I would love to see a comparison between where the top 100 firms were positioned 15yrs ago and now.
That would show the partners who've under-performed when in charge of good firms and those who have the midas touch. I think it would show that the Leeds and Manchester firms were far ahead of their time in terms of spotting business opportunities whereas Bristol and Newcastle firms were slow to act. Obviously very much generalising by city but the statistics would be revealing.

  • The firms outside the top 45 have a battle on their hands to survive the next 10 years. ABS will shake up the legal market like never before.

Sub-standard partners won't be able to rake in £350k a year at backwater firms. They'll be brutally forced out and the next generation of partners will show no loyalty after seeing all the redundancies of recent years.

  • My former firm has dropped down the list again (fifth fall in five years).

They look to be in crisis.
