CLEARY GOTTLIEB Steen & Hamilton’s advice to
Mittal Steel on its £17bn bid for Arcelor, led by
Paris-based partner Jean-Pierre Vignaud, was the
highlight of an exceptional year that saw turnover in
London hit $63.5m (£36.3m).
The firm operates a classic lockstep – and a long
one too at 14 years. The remuneration system is one
reason why Cleary traditionally makes very few
lateral hires.
However, the last year generated a handful,
including those of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer
corporate partner Jürgen Sieger in Cologne and
Allen & Overy London-based corporate partner
Michael McDonald.
Outside Europe the firm launched its first mainland
China office, with Cravath Swaine & Moore securities
and capital markets partner Clayton Johnson
opening its new Beijing office.
