Essex Court Chambers had a busy year with seven House of Lords appearances, backed up by 24 trips to the Court of Appeal. Turnover rose accordingly by 6 per cent to £33m, while the set broke through the £500,000 RPB mark for the first time.
The biggest case in which the set was involved was, of course, the collapse of the claim brought by the liquidators of BCCI against the Bank of England, although Essex Court barristers Gordon Pollock QC and Nathan Pillow were on the losing side.
Other matters went better for the set. Andrew Hochhauser QC successfully defended HSBC against the sexual orientation discrimination claim brought by banker Peter Lewis, and Joe Smouha QC represented Eurotunnel and a number of individual defendants in a crucial jurisdictional case in the High Court. |
