It was an uninspiring year for Bristows. Revenue
dropped from £19.5m to £19m, while average PEP
slumped from £241,000 to £231,000.
The firm continues to plough its IP furrow
successfully, with the department accounting for
more than 50 per cent of the firm's turnover. A
good example is the long-running patent dispute
between Smith International and Bristows client
Halliburton, which at the time of going to press
looked set to go to the Court of Appeal.
But the transactional side of the business has
struggled to raise its game to the heights of the IP
elements. However, a 26-partner firm with a client
base that includes the BBC, Diageo, Kimberly-Clark
and Novartis must be doing something right.
