WITH ONLY eight partners in London,
Simpson Thacher & Bartlett is a tiny outpost
of the Wall Street firm. Its captures of Euan
Gorrie from Allen & Overy and Stephen Short
from Ashurst in 2003 propelled it to City
prominence, but US law advice for US clients
is still the staple activity of the office. Indeed,
the UK end of things - much scrutinised at
the time of the hires - has been entirely a
supporting act, judging from the deals list.
US clients KKR and Blackstone dominate the
firm's European activity.
Simpson Thacher advised Blackstone on a
number of portfolio acquisitions and disposals
with a real estate flavour, such as the sale of
the Savoy Group to Quinlan Private for £750m.
