THE MAGIC circle set, which celebrates its
40th birthday in 2006, enjoyed a storming
year, recording a 9 per cent growth in revenue
in an otherwise pretty static year for
the commercial bar.
This growth came despite the loss of one
of its leading silks, Elizabeth Gloster QC, who
left to take up her post as the first ever female
judge of the Commercial Court.
That it was able to grow was thanks to a
roll call of heavyweight litigation, from Equi-
table Life v Ernst & Young to Sumitomo Bank v
Credit Lyonnais Rouse. From key client Slaughter
and May's injunction of Freshfields Bruckhaus
Deringer over Philip Green's bid for
Marks & Spencer to MasterCard's defence of
ongoing proceedings brought by the Office
of Fair Trading, the list is endless.
However, the set will have to do without
Robert Ralphs, its joint senior clerk since 1974
who is moving to a consultancy role after
more than 50 years in practice. |
