The UK data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has opened a consultation on proposed changes to the data protection notification process. The proposed changes will affect almost all businesses or other organisations that process personal data in the United Kingdom.

In the United Kingdom all businesses or other organisations that are “data controllers” are required to submit an annual notification to the ICO of their data processing activities together with an annual notification fee. The processing of personal data by a data controller without an annual notification to the ICO is a criminal offence.

A data controller is a business or other organisation that determines the manner and purpose of any processing of personal data. In practice, almost all businesses or other organisations that process personal data in the United Kingdom (for example, processing personal data relating to their employees) will be considered a data controller…
