This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
Tulkinghorn is not usually one to pick up on subliminal messages - being deaf in one ear and blind as a bat doesn't help - but Bird & Bird's recent press release about its new employment partner certainly contained a few. Although the text is about employment partner Philip Hartman joining the firm's Dutch office from Loyens & Loeff, it mentions the word 'corporate' eight times. Could Bird & Bird be using an unrelated publicity opportunity to push its corporate team? "Key hire complements expanding corporate team" screams the release. It goes on: "Hartman will play a crucial role in employment advice... particularly within the corporate practice With a strong background in employment law, particularly relating to corporate transactions, Hartman's recruitment will bring an added dimension to the firm's expanding corporate group." Not content that this is enough, Dutch managing partner Harry Rek adds: "He [Hartman] is a highly experienced employment lawyer, particularly in deal-related and corporate activity." And just in case you haven't yet been influenced by this clever subtext, Hartman's quote also reminds everyone that he is a corporate whizz. What was that old adage about saying something often enough?
