TUC clashes with the CBI over employment claims

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has slammed the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) over a report into employment trends, claiming the organisation has "got everything wrong about employment tribunals".

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber hit out at the CBI over its findings and called for the organisation to encourage members to recognise trade unions.

The TUC says that contrary to CBI claims, there has not been an increase in contentious tribunal cases. The TUC is calling upon the government to allow group litigation to reduce the workload of employment tribunals.

The union also wants statutory recognition to apply to small businesses, allowing it and other trade unions to intervene in disputes and so avoid litigation.

Barber added that it appeared the CBI was preparing to oppose further minimum wage increases. He said that the minimum wage has had immense success despite not benefiting as many workers as it was intended to.
