Tulkinghorn is obsessed with solicitors and soliciting in general. He therefore watched with interest Billie Piper's turn as an elite escort - one believes that is the correct term - in the TV programme The Secret Diary of a Call Girl - for the legal angle, obviously.
And one came up quite quickly, so to speak. Belle, the lead character, explains away her late nights and decent cashflow to her friends as the result of working as a legal secretary at "one of those big law firms" that needs contracts completing at a moment's notice at three in the morning.
Is the programme an allegory of the legal market, perhaps? An allusion to Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld's similar-sounding scandal in May, when a legal secretary was found to be working for notorious DC madam Jeane Palfrey, maybe?Tulkinghorn solicits his readers to inform him whether or not Belle is a realistic portrayal.
