How should I go about asking for my training contract to be deferred?
Contrary to my expectation I managed to get a TC this year, however I had wanted to spend a year travelling around the world before beginning my legal career. How would I go about deferring my TC? Any tips? Or would I be best to wait until after finishing my TC? Is it better to take a year off now before my TC or after qualification?

Well done on the TC! I would imagine the best person to ask would be the HR manager of your firm what their policy/view is on deferrals. It may well be that if you can sell your adventure as a chance to make yourself more worldly-wise and a better all-rounded person they would be more supportive than if you were say sipping cokctails in Thailaind doing a "gap yahh".
You may however find it better/easier to wait though as post-qualification you will have a large salary which you can then use to fund your trip a lot better than the dregs of whatever family/bank loan tided you over through your LPC - which they may prefer you to complete before going abroad. Plus it will give you something to look forward to when dragging case folders twce your size up county court steps in the pouring rain for minimum wage!
In the end though it is down to two entities: your firm and yourself. But it is always best to sound them out about the idea first.

In addition, given the current economic climate, it might be best to start the TC as soon as possible, in case anything changes with your firm.
