Canadian firm Torys has been on a hiring spree, plundering accountancy and accountancy-tied firms in New York and Toronto
Two Arthur Andersen tax partners, Gary Gartner and Jeffrey Scheine, have joined Torys in New York. Gartner was head of Andersen's international tax practice in New York, where he oversaw the firm's corporate tax planning in the north-east region of the US and Canada. He has become chair of Torys' New York-based tax team. Before Andersen both he and Scheine worked at Canadian law firm Goodman Phillips & Vineberg. They have taken tax associate Pamela Petree with them. New York managing partner Charles Dorkey said: "Gary Gartner, Jeffrey Scheine and Pamela Petree are outstanding tax lawyers whose tax experience and drive will be of enormous value to our clients on both sides of the US-Canada border. Our strategy is to build a strong team in New York and we are thrilled to have these three attorneys join us." Torys' tax team in New York now boasts four partners. In Toronto Torys has poached a nine-lawyer intellectual property team from Donahue, Ernst & Young's affiliated law firm in Canada, to set up an IP practice. Partners Conor McCourt and Eileen McMahon have led the exodus, taking seven associates and two technical consultants to Torys. The team will focus on matters relating to biotechnology, life science and pharmaceuticals clients. Head of Torys' technology practice Gary Solway said that the firm had decided it was time to bring IP work in-house to offer clients a comprehensive service on transactional matters. He added: "They will enhance the services we can offer across the spectrum of our corporate practice."
