Clifford Chance global head of oil and gas Bleddyn Phillips is moving to Moscow (see page 16). Joint global head of energy Andrew Grenville's assertion that the move is motivated by the firm's desire to target a "rapidly developing market" may sound a little axiomatic, given that Russia practically invented making money out of gas.
And Clifford Chance is hardly the new kid on the block. Phillips will be running a dedicated team of 20 that has the $2.5bn (£1.26bn) merger between major client West Siberian Resources and Alliance Oil Company under its belt.
But it should also be noted that Phillips is married to none other than Anne Pringles. Otherwise known as the next ambassador to the Russian Federation.
With those kind of contacts Phillips should get off to a flying start.
