Theodore Goddard has boosted the numbers in its flagging employment department by hiring Allen & Overy's (A&O) head of employee share schemes Stephen Chater as a part-time consultant
"I'm going to develop the employee shares team," said Chater. Theodores lost the only partner in the team, Mark Catchpole, last year to Stephenson Harwood. Some of the slack was taken up by employment and former managing partner Peter Cooke, who last month anno-unced his departure to Salans. The firm also has one full-time assistant doing benefits work.
Chater, one of London's top employee share scheme practitioners, left A&O because he wanted a lifestyle change. He has been with the magic circle firm since 1979 and was made partner in 1989.
His practice deals with the development of share schemes in an international context and the effects of mergers, takeovers and buyouts on such schemes. Clients include Rexam and Celltech.
Chater is due to start with Theodores on 28 January.
