What was your first-ever job? Digging out a winter cow shed with a pitchfork.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? Asking the then Norton Rose senior partner if he could send my fax (and quickly) as it was urgent. He was alone in the fax room sending his own fax late at night. He took it with good grace.
Where's the best place to go if you want to find out what's really going on in the office? I talk to my friend Sharon. She knows everything.
What time do you usually leave the office? 6-7pm, unless it's busy, then it's the Twelfth of Never.
What do you do at weekends? I act as entertainment officer for Andrew, aged 2, and James, aged 5. Reading Roald Dahl and taxiing to parties and football etc.
What's your favourite restaurant? Club Gascon in London or the Bombay Bicycle Shop in Hampstead.
If you weren't a lawyer, what would you have been? Historian or political journalist - neither pay as well.
Who was your mentor or role model? My father, who never gave up and always tried to be kind.
What's the best thing about your job? Solving problems and doing deals for my clients and being appreciated for it.
What's the toughest thing about your job? Trying to give every client 100 per cent of my time.
What's your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? Going to a - nameless - firm, which everyone told me was a horrible place to work. And it was.
What car(s) do you drive? Vauxhall Astra, which is very embarrassing, but my wife and I are always crashing it and Andrew and James would make any car look like a chicken shed.
What book are you currently reading? Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak - awesome, The Human Factor by Graham Greene and Robert Bartlett's England Under the Norman and Angevin Kings, 1075-1225.
What's on your CD player at the moment? Pretty in Pink by The Psychedelic Furs and Léo Delibes's Sylvia - since seeing Darcy Bussel dance it, I'm hooked.
What's your favourite children's book? The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis. I read it so often when I was young it fell apart.
