What was your first-ever job? Putting doors on Bedford vans.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? Selling a property and sending the entire sale proceeds to the seller, forgetting to repay the mortgage first.
Where's the best place to go if you want to find out what's really going on in the office? There's always someone in every firm who can't help gossiping - I just go and say hello and the rest follows.
What time do you usually leave the office? 7.30pm, when I'm too hungry to think.
What do you do at weekends? Wet walks in Wales with my wife, wolf and assorted offspring.
What's your favourite restaurant? Hare and Tortoise - a Chinese on the way back from work.
If you weren't a lawyer, what would you have been? An artist - a very impoverished one. Or a climber with no family and a haunted look.
Who was your mentor or role model? A lawyer in Scotland who lived a glorious bachelor existence spending his free time sailing, partying and fixing cars and bikes.
What's the best thing about your job? Winning arguments.
What's the toughest thing about your job? Worrying that the whole thing will go belly up and it'll be all my fault.
What's your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? I once went to an interview for a job in the Congo believing it to be in the crude oil industry, in which I had experience. It turned out to be in palm oil, but I got the job anyway. What did I learn? How to say no to job offers.
What car(s) do you drive? A wonderful 4X4 Volvo seven-seater with cruise control. I still cry about my 2CV at night, though.
What book are you currently reading? Haruki Murakami's A Wild Sheep Chase.
What's on your CD player at the moment? A Polish instrumental band called Kroke.
What's your favourite children's book? Asterix in Spain, with the smelly fish.
