What was your first-ever job? Articled clerk at Fox Brook Marshall.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? Serving a writ and being chased down the road by a man with a meat cleaver. Luckily, I drove a convertible at the time and had the foresight to leave the engine running.
Where's the best place to go if you want to find out what's really going on in the office? Speak to any secretary. They can give you an in-depth analysis on any partner, employee, or practice area - better than a Google search.
What time do you usually leave the office? Around 8pm.
What do you do at weekends? I usually spend my weekends entertaining, watching sport, working and just being with the family.
What's your favourite restaurant? 39 Steps in Manchester, the Lime Tree in Didsbury and Belle Epoque in Knutsford. There's also the Messalina in Sydney, Australia.
If you weren't a lawyer, what would you have been? I would have loved to be a professional sportsman.
Who was your mentor or role model? I have three. The first was my father, who taught me about ethics, morality, laughter and how to live one's life. He also gave me a life-long interest in public companies when he became chief executive officer of Carclo Engineering. The second was my first boss Arthur Henstock, who taught me that running a legal practice is akin to running a business and, finally, John Wright, president of Intercontinental Hotels, who taught me that you can do anything you want in life.
What's the best thing about your job? The people I work with and the ability to travel the world meeting new people.
What's the toughest thing about your job? Long hours and being away from home.
What's your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? How long have you got?
What car(s) do you drive? Mercedes CL500.
What book are you currently reading? The Secret History by Donna Tartt.
What's on your CD player at the moment? I'm tone deaf, but my wife is educating me to love Mozart.
What's your favourite children's book? The Famous Five series by Enid Blyton.
