What was your first-ever job? Petrol pump attendant in a garage - and I'm still in awe of the workings of the internal combustion engine.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? My first purchase completion, which I'd rehearsed for hours. I found on returning to my office that I'd forgotten to pick up the transfer.
Where's the best place to go if you want to find out what's really going on in the office? Discreet eavesdropping in the corridor.
What time do you usually leave the office? It varies, but usually around 7pm.
What do you do at weekends? Unpaid chauffeuring for my children.
What's your favourite restaurant? The Waterside Inn in Bray, Berkshire.
If you weren't a lawyer, what would you have been? A commercial pilot.
Who is your mentor or role model? My boss and - later - partner Derrick Bretherton, who taught me that common sense and commerciality are as important in a lawyer as technical ability.
What's the best thing about your job? The variety - no two days are the same.
What's the toughest thing about your job? Delivering advice which the client doesn't want to receive.
What's your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? Going into the office on a Sunday to make stylistic - and therefore quite irrelevant - changes to a 200-page report and managing to 'lose' the document from the system. Lesson: don't pretend to have skills which you are too old to possess.
What car(s) do you drive? Jaguar S Type and an immaculately restored 1967 MGB Roadster.
What book are you currently reading? Petain by Charles Williams.
What's on your CD player at the moment? Come Away with Me by Norah Jones.
What's your favourite children's book? The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier.
