The Lawyer Global Litigation Top 50 report is the only ranking of international law firms by litigation and arbitration revenue and is essential reading for anyone seeking to benchmark their litigation and dispute resolution practices...
This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
Edward Bennet, head of trust and private capital, Bedell Cristin
What was your first-ever job? Balloon-in-a-box delivery man.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? I was lucky enough not to have any bad experiences, although in 1989, after law school, I took a year off and travelled to Australia to gain experience with Australian firms before starting my articles in London. Australia was in the depths of recession and jobs for inexperienced Pommie law school graduates weren't thick on the ground.
Where's the best place to go if you want to find out what's really going on in the office? The marketing department.
What time do you usually leave the office? Usually between 7pm and 7.30pm.
What do you do at the weekends? I'm training for the Bedell Cristin Cycle Peru in November, a two-week charity bike ride in support of Jersey Hospice Care across the Peruvian Andes.
What's your favourite restaurant? Out of town, Longueville Manor, or in town, Bohemia or La Capannina - all of which are in Jersey.
If you weren't a lawyer, what would you have been? Something in property development, failing which, putting my balloon-in-a-box experiences to good use.
Who was your mentor or role model? Two of my current partners, Alan Dart and Anthony Dessain.
What's the best thing about your job? The variety of work, together with a great team.
What's the toughest thing about your job? In the modern world of electronic communication, sometimes it can be difficult convincing some clients that addressing a trust problem spanning several trust documents and generations requires more than 'by return' advice.
What's your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? Assuming that a telephone instruction from a very excited individual with a very strange name in respect of what seemed to be a highly convoluted transaction was a hoax call. It turned out he was a client of the firm. Never assume anything.
What cars do you drive? Maserati Spyder when sunny, a Ford Fiesta when not.
What book are you currently reading? The Lonely Planet Guide to Peru.
What's on your CD player at the moment? JackInABox by Turin Brakes; 18 by Moby; Silence is Easy by Starsailor; The Magic Numbers [by The Magic Numbers]; Back to Bedlam by James Blunt.
What's your favourite children's book? The Secret Seven series by Enid Blyton.
