The Lawyer Global Litigation Top 50 report is the only ranking of international law firms by litigation and arbitration revenue and is essential reading for anyone seeking to benchmark their litigation and dispute resolution practices...
This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
What was your first ever job? Working in a chandlery in St Mawes in the summer of 1968. It was excellent experience of how to sell something about which I knew absolutely nothing – something that’s stood me in very good stead.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? In the days when property completions took place in person and there were no bank transfers, it was losing the bankers’ draft on the way to a completion. It was the stuff of nightmares.
Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office? Ask the girls on reception.
What time do you usually leave the office? It varies, but generally around 8pm.
What do you do at weekends? There’s no set pattern beyond trying to fit in as much as possible. Generally, I walk the dog, chastise the chickens for failing to lay eggs, chauffeur my children and try to watch and play as much sport as I can reasonably get away with.
What’s your favourite restaurant? Chez Bruce in London.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you have been? An actor.
Who was your mentor or role model? I really don’t think I had one.
What’s the best thing about your job? I suppose the fact that I actually enjoy what I do. The intellectual challenge of my work is certainly rewarding and there’s nothing quite like the buzz of success. However, it’s the people that make it worthwhile, and I’m lucky enough to work with some very good ones, who are also great fun.
What’s the toughest thing about your job? Not letting work dominate my life, coping with disappointments (particularly losing a big case) while remaining my usual calm, smiling and relaxed self.
What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? Not forming Pemberton Greenish earlier. What I learnt from that – somewhat late in life – is to be decisive.
What car(s) do you drive? S-Type Jaguar.
What book are you currently reading? Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything.
What’s on your CD player at the moment? Running on Empty by Jackson Browne.
What’s your favourite children’s book? Horton Hatches the Egg by Dr Seuss.
