What was your first ever job? Saturdays at a photographers in Birmingham’s Great Western Arcade. It only paid £1, but to a 14-year-old, the assistants were goddesses.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? Visiting the cashier. She was fierce, ancient, sat at a high desk on a stool, wrote with a dip pen and had a serious body odour problem.
Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office? The trite (but, maybe, accurate) answer is ‘inside your own head’. If you’re a good manager people will talk to you.
What time do you usually leave the office? Either side of Cheltenham’s rush hour.
What do you do at weekends? Avoid the office like the plague, but deal with urgent issues from home. In the rugby season I watch Gloucester RFC with one eye (and ‘in the Land of the Blind etc’)
What’s your favourite restaurant? The Devonshire Arms in Wharfdale.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you have been? A journalist, except I haven’t got enough cheek, or something in advertising.
Who was your mentor or role model? In my youth there was no one. More recently my grown up children who seem older and wiser than me.
What’s the best thing about your job? The proximity of retirement.
What’s the toughest thing about your job? Extricating the firm from my mistakes.
What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? Failing to trust my own judgement on certain issues usually personality related – and still I do it.
What car(s) do you drive? An XK8, the advancing age of which is disguised by a tacky personalised number plate.
What book are you currently reading? The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time again – this time not in one day and with a more manly control of my emotions.
What’s on your CD player at the moment? Natalie Merchant Live in Concert.
What’s your favourite children’s book? Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes.
