What was your first ever job? Selling lottery tickets for Everton FC.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? The first time – of many – that I was mauled by one of the Masters in the Royal Courts of Justice, probably over some trivial procedural misdemeanour.
Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office? My office – I call in an unsuspecting colleague, usually my partner Richard Jolly, and demand to know.
What time do you usually leave the office? 6.30pm.
What do you do at weekends? Watch a lot of football and pretend to make myself useful in the house.
What’s your favourite restaurant? Bodegroes near Pwllheli in the Lleyn Peninsula.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you have been? A ballad singer.
Who was your mentor or role model? Ralph Shipway of Le Brasseurs, where I spent three very happy years in the late 1980s – I still invoke his sayings on a regular basis.
What’s the best thing about your job? The excitement of managing a large, growing and dynamic organisation, full of opportunities and ideas and good people.
What’s the toughest thing about your job? The mental agility required to go from one issue to another rapidly.
What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? The biggest mistake was not embracing IT a lot earlier, say 10 years ago – which I have only really appreciated in the last couple of years – but I’ve learnt and it’s a central feature of my role and the firm’s development now.
What car(s) do you drive? A Ford – Galaxy with the kids, Fiesta on my own.
What book are you currently reading? The Power of Now by Eckhardt Tolle.
What’s on your CD player at the moment? The Christy Moore collection.
What’s your favourite children’s book? The Jennings series by Anthony Buckeridge.
