The Lawyer Global Litigation Top 50 report is the only ranking of international law firms by litigation and arbitration revenue and is essential reading for anyone seeking to benchmark their litigation and dispute resolution practices...
This year, The Lawyer’s annual ranking of the largest UK law firms by turnover is available as an interactive, digital benchmarking tool. For the first time this will allow you to manipulate each data set against the metrics of your choice.
What was your first ever job? I spent four months on my dad’s payroll doing up a house in Devon. If you’ve seen my DIY handiwork, you’ll know why I’m a lawyer.
What was your worst experience as a trainee? Being told by my boss in my first week to run a client meeting on my own because he was “too bored to do the preparation” – not something I’d recommend.
Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office? The gents or, presumably, the ladies – although I’ve not tried it.
What time do you usually leave the office? 7pm.
What do you do at weekends? Try in vain to assert my masculinity in a house where my wife and three daughters reign. Even the dog is a girl.
What’s your favourite restaurant? Metro in Birmingham and J Sheekey in London.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you have been? Something in finance.
Who was your mentor or role model? Someone called John Hall. He joined Wragge & Co at the age of 15 as an office boy, became a partner and retired 49 years later, so I have a few years to go.
What’s the best thing about your job? Motivating people to do better and enjoy it.
What’s the toughest thing about your job? Telling people they need to move on.
What’s your biggest work/career mistake and what did you learn from it? Not taking a third year out between university and starting work. I missed out on spending 12 months sailing around the Caribbean with friends. It taught me to always take time out to have some fun – we’re only here once.
What car(s) do you drive? Whatever is nearest with keys and petrol.
What book are you currently reading? The Predators’ Ball by Connie Bruck. It’s about Michael Milken and the junk bond era.
What’s on your CD player at the moment? The Rolling Stones.
What’s your favourite children’s book? Doctor Seuss, which is also my children’s favourite, so I’ve read it about 300 times.
