It’s hard to escape Blackstone Chambers QC Dinah Rose at the moment.
The Lawyer Awards Barrister of the Year is currently involved in three cases either for or against the government (see feature).
She has been instructed by the Treasury Solicitors office to act as an intervener in Seldon vs Clarkson Wright & Jakes on behalf of the Department of Business Innovation & Skills.
She’s also limbering up for round two of the government’s fight against Heyday, part of the age concern charity.
Both cases are about retirement age - something that must seem a long way off for the combative silk, given her demanding workload.
But just in case things get too cosy with the government, she’s also acting for a group of Equitable Life policy holders looking for compensation from the Treasury.
Rose made her name in the public sector. She famously took on the government over its handling of the BAE Systems Saudi arms sale scandal.
She lost the case but not before forcing Tony Blair to admit Saudis had pressured him into dropping the SFO corruption inquiry.
“The story climaxed with the recipient of a £1bn bribe going off to threaten the Prime Minister,” she recalls.
Now who said public law was humdrum?
