The MBA – an essential tool for ambitious lawyers or just an expensive luxury?

  • Personally I think an MBA can help lawyers in two key areas. Firstly, for those stepping up to firm management, it gives a broad understanding of management and leadership theory that is often missing from a traditional legal career. Case studies and assignments help bridge the gap from theory to practice.
Secondly, for those lawyers advising businesses, clients continually seek counsel who understand their business (I certainly did in-house). An MBA provides a different perspective on this and certainly allowed me to have discussions with my internal clients that helped me better understand the business drivers for certain deals and as a result provide better, more focused advice.
