What was your first job?

Floor sweeper in a textile mill.

What subjects did you fail at school?

Economics A level. So no hard questions please.

What was your first ever salary as a lawyer?

£9,000 as an articled clerk at Booth & Co.

What would you have done if you hadn't been a lawyer?

As my father likes to remind me, I am a slug on the cabbage of industry and unemployable.

What was your most satisfying professional moment?

Persuading part of the world's largest company that they did not need to use a City or big six Leeds firm to give them the depth and quality of service they wanted.

What was your most embarrassing professional moment?

Being ripped to shreds two weeks into articles by a plc chairman for not knowing what I was talking about at a board meeting.

What do you least like about being a lawyer?

The amount of time it takes me to do my job properly.

And the best thing about being a lawyer?

Variety - things are rarely dull in the office.

What annoys you most about clients?

Those who pay late or not at all, having agreed payment terms, demanded the world and then had it delivered to them.

Who do you most admire, and why?

My family (all of them) for putting up with my annoying habits.

Which famous person or historical figure would be your ideal client and why?

The Beatles - it would have been brilliant fun.

What is your most annoying habit?

Depends who you ask, I am sure I have many.

What's your biggest fear?

Giving a truthful answer to this question.

How do you relax?

Lots of different ways, thank goodness. The more ways you have the more likely you are to get round to it.

What is your most precious possession?

My ice axe - it regularly keeps me from disaster while relaxing.

Where would you most like to be right now?

Somewhere high up in the Alps - but without the usual monster rucksack.

In 10 years' time where do you see yourself?

Things are changing so fast, I cannot see that far ahead, but hopefully I won't be working for a large firm of accountants.
