What subjects did you fail at school?

All but one of my mock O-Levels.

What was your first job?

Paperboy.

What was your first ever salary as a lawyer?

17,000 peanuts (sorry pounds) per annum during articles.

What would you have done if you hadn't been a lawyer?

Freelance photojournalist.

What was your most satisfying professional moment?

Being asked to contribute a chapter to one of the loose-leaf practitioners manuals (to be published shortly).

What was your most embarrassing professional moment?

"Not doing particularly well" on a consent order during articles (I was never cut out to be a litigator).

What do you least like about being a lawyer?

The sheer weight of paper on corporate transactions.

And the best thing about being a lawyer?

Mental stimulation (on matters other than corporate transactions).

What annoys you most about clients?

Their dislike of 7am breakfast meetings. Surely these leave the rest of the day free for other things?

Who do you most admire, and why?

Anyone who achieves something when the odds are stacked against them.

Which famous person or historical figure would be your ideal client and why?

Robert Maxwell - I'd make sure there would never be any need for the Pensions Act 1995.

What is your most annoying habit?

Shouting too loudly into the speakerphone.

What's your biggest fear?

My monthly "work-in progress" summary.

How do you relax?

Energetic holidays in far-flung places.

What is your most precious possession?

My photography albums.

Where would you most like to be right now?

In Andalucia (but I'll have to wait until Christmas).

In 10 years' time where do you see yourself?

Somewhere remote and isolated in South America, with a backpack (and the return half of a flight ticket from London).
