What was your first job?
As a midshipman, washing up for 600 sailors on HMS Fearless while in the terminal stage of seasickness.
What was your first ever salary as a lawyer?
£45 per week as a vacation student with Ince & Co.
What would you have done if you hadn't become a lawyer?
A chauffeur. I had a summer job at university, driving a Roller, a Jaguar and a Daimler. My employer offered me a permanent position and I very nearly accepted.
Which law could you live without?
Just at present, COGSA 1992, but watch Lloyd's Law Reports.
What was your most embarrassing professional moment?
As prosecutor for the Department of Transport, failing to persuade Alnwick Magistrates that the "lookout" rule is the most important of the International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea.
What car do you drive?
My wife's company Mondeo estate.
Which famous person would you like to go out with?
Samuel Pepys - he's the hedonist's hedonist.
Where would you go to eat?
The White Tower.
What's the best thing on TV?
I only watch TV between 9pm and 10.15pm on Thursdays - Absolutely Fabulous and then This Life.
Which movie do you wish you'd appeared in?
Grease - preferably if they cast Madonna as Sandra Dee.
What's your most often-worn piece of clothing?
An ageing Gieves reefer.
What book(s) are you reading at the moment?
Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris, Bad Land by Jonathan Raban and Endymion by Benjamin Disraeli.
What is your all-time favourite record?
I have Van Gogh's ear for music.
What piece of advice would you give to anyone entering the profession now?
