The Law Society has received an overwhelming response to its requests for members of the public to become the first lay members of its governing council and two new boards. About 1,200 people have applied after an advert was placed in national newspapers asking for volunteers. Successful applicants will be paid £3,000 a year plus expenses in return for serving about 12 days a year. The governing council, the new standards board and the compliance board on which volunteers will serve meet six times a year.
