Over the latter part of 2011 The Lawyer’s editorial team embarked on one of our most enjoyable projects of the year: picking 100 high-achieving names for our annual celebration of talent that is the Hot 100.

We try to choose a representative sample of the commercial legal profession, so in these pages you will find lawyers from all sectors, from corporate rainmakers to family lawyers. This year there are 45 women.
The Hot 100 usually has a topical flavour: in 2008 and 2009, there were a good number of lawyers involved in credit crunch and bank bailout work. This year, you’ll see that a number of lawyers involved in dealing with the fallout from the phone-hacking scandals are nominated in these pages. But our mix is, as always, eclectic. One thing unites all these lawyers: sheer ability.
