The curious case of Latham and Spain

US firm Latham & Watkins made a splash in Spain this week with news that it is to open in Barcelona and Madrid.

This is a long-awaited opening. Latham has been planning it for nearly a year and www.thelawyer.com first broke the news of Cuatrecasas partner Jose Luis Blanco’s hire on 26 October.

Considering the (no doubt) meticulous planning, it is curious that Latham should launch with one partner spread between Barcelona and Madrid.

Blanco hails from Barcelona and it seems the Barcelona office exists just so he can be near the wife and family on Mondays and Fridays.

Latham obviously feels it needs to be in Madrid, but this is an expensive compromise that many Catalan lawyers will feel Latham did not need to make.
