  • I saw an excellent concert production of The Mikado on Sunday. There were many witty topical allusions, but none to current Pooh-Bah-s.
I rather suspect that Gilbert and Sullivan's satire will never become irrelevant.
In these litigious times, even though not many people will be familiar with the Mikado, I must point out that I am in no way implying that Mr Baldry requires insults as Pooh-Bah does. The similarities are only in their multiple capacities and sources of income.

  • Brilliant article, very well written. Good to see that others are confused my the Right Hon or is it Barrister Baldry acting on behalf of a solicitor for a man who is not even on trial in the UK

  • The lawyer who instructed Baldry, Santosh Zaiwalla, has an interesting history of his own. In 1997, in the last days of the John Major government, when Baldry was still a minister, Zaiwalla lent him 5000 pounds interest-free and Baldry subsequently recommended Zaiwalla for a CBE. When the Commons found out about this in 2000, Baldry was forced to apologize to the house.
Later Zaiwalla was involved in a similar incident with Keith Vaz. See the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards' report here: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200001/cmselect/cmstnprv/314/31418.htm

  • Some very perceptive points. The blunderbuss approach to correcting libels should end. I have to confess that I still don't fully understand what Mr Baldry was up to.

  • Perhaps it would be useful if members of Parliament (ours as well as the Mother of) were issued with special hats they could wear when acting in their capacity as MPs and another hat they could wear when acting in their other capacity. Perhaps to make clear when they're acting in their non-MP capacity these hats could, like the lion tamer's hat in Monty Python, have 'Other Capacity' emblazoned on them. Perhaps even in lights, so they could act in their other capacities at night.
