Tesco is heading for a High Court confrontation with consulting civil and structural engineers Ernest Green Partnership. It accuses the firm of failing to warn it of chemical contamination of a site it bought for £8.7m for a superstore in Redbridge, London. Tesco says it cost it £1.42m to clean up the site after it discovered it was contaminated with arsenic, cadmium and mercury at levels which exceeded guidelines. The firm claims that if it had been warned beforehand, it would have negotiated a reduced price or sale conditions allowing it to rescind the sale contract. Tesco is being represented in the action by Berwin Leighton.
