Temple Court targets China with HK outpost

Temple Court Chambers is establishing a Hong Kong annexe in a bid to attract more work to London from Greater China.
The London set’s Hong Kong presence is likely to take the form of a representative office or consultancy.
London-based barrister Helen Tung, who speaks Mandarin and Cantonese and was called to the bar in 2009, is leading the expansion.
Temple Court was established in 2005 by Charles Mannan and has always been focused on international markets.
It already has outposts in Sri Lankan capital Colombo, Bangladeshi capital Dhaka and St Vincent. It had planned to open in the Chinese city of Shenzen, but is understood to have ditched this plan in favour of Hong Kong.
The move comes as a number of London sets have seen a rise in China-related work and links with China.
No5 Chambers, for example, has an alliance with Zhonglun W&D, the first Chinese firm to enter London. It also has a Mandarin-speaking barrister, Carole Murray, who has 12 years’ experience in Hong Kong.
Practice director Tony McDaid said that the chambers had seen an increase in the volume of work and clients from a number of emerging countries, including China, and may establish a presence in Asia in the future.
