Telegraph brings in legal-chief-in-waiting
The Telegraph Media Group has hired Associated Newspaper’s group litigation adviser to work alongside its most senior lawyer Arthur Wynn-Davies as he prepares for retirement.
It is understood that new joiner Adam Cannon will eventually succeed Wynn-Davies, who is in negotiations with the company over a departure date.
Cannon said: “There are very few of these opportunities available in Fleet Street and I have nothing but respect for The [Daily] Telegraph - the expenses stuff was fantastic journalism.”
Wynn-Davies has spent 33 years as a Fleet Street lawyer, making him one of the most experienced in the business.
Last year he was part of the team involved in revealing the MPs’ expenses scandal. In April The Daily Telegraph won a major libel case brought against it by Addleshaw Goddard on behalf of tennis player Robert Dee. It was the only media outlet to challenge the claim, with more than 30 defendants agreeing to pay costs (The Lawyer, 28 April).
Cannon has been advising Associated Newspapers, the group behind the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday, since he joined in 1997 as a night lawyer. He joined the group full-time in 2001.
