Tax network recruits record number of firms

MacIntyre StrAter International, the network of independent tax, law and accountancy service firms, has seen 26 new members sign up for the first half of 1998 – a record for the group.

The network provides members with the muscle to compete with the Big Five accountancy firms on tax and legal advice in cross-border transactions while maintaining their local brand name.

Harriet Moore, marketing co-ordinator, said: “There is a greater need to do cross-border work and a number of firms want to expand their client bases without losing the reputation they have built in their local markets.”

The 26 new members come from 14 countries, including South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Japan and France.

About 45-50 per cent of the membership enrolled on a per-partner basis are lawyers.

The only UK law firm representative is Lee Bolton & Lee, but Moore predicted the current recruitment drive would attract new UK members by the end of the year.

The network was set up in 1989 by UK accountancy firm MacIntyre & Co and Dusseldorf-based multidisciplinary partnership Dr Abers StrAter & Partners. It now has 180 firms based in 75 countries.
