Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer is taking on a partner from one of the US's leading tax boutiques to boost its tax practice.`Claude Stansbury joins the Washington DC office of the firm from Ivins Phillips & Baker, where he was one of around 30 lawyers.`He will be the firm's third US tax partner, the second to be based in Washington.`US managing partner Stephen Revell said: "We have two tax partners in the US tax group at the moment and that wasn't enough because of the demands for US tax advice that we were getting. It's a mixture in demand from our practice in Europe and Asia and our structured finance group in New York which has been growing very rapidly. It was just time to grow the team."`The head of the US tax group Gregory May, who is former head of tax at Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, is also based in Washington, though Revell says the whole team does global work.`The firm's structured finance department has been doing a lot of heavily tax driven deals in the US for clients such as CIBC, Barclays and Citigroup.
