When it comes to hiring somebody to fill the role of strategy director at one of the world’s largest outsourcing companies - CPA Global - you can’t really get more strategic than bringing on board Leah Cooper (see story).
In her role as managing attorney at mining company Rio Tinto Cooper gave private practice a wake-up call by sending work traditionally carried out by trainees and junior associates to a team at CPA Global in India (see story).
The cost savings were immense - about $8m per year in fact.
This led to talk that if other clients follow suit trainees could find themselves out of a job (see story).
But in so doing Cooper probably secured her own long-term career prospects.
Meanwhile, did Cherie Booth QC, sitting as a judge, cross the line in remarking upon a defendant’s religious beliefs when sentencing him for actual bodily harm? Much of the media seem to think so. But Allen Green - author of our new Bad Law blog - would beg to differ.
