Studio Legale Sutti is to open an office in Genoa, having merged with local firm Studio Pennisi.
The firm's inherited team of three partners and six associates specialise in maritime law and its office will add to the Studio Legale's existing network of offices in Rome, Milan, London and Tokyo.
Managing partner Stefano Sutti says he expects to gain business from being able to offer its clients an international rather than local service.
"The smaller practices are not as used to dealing with international clients and we believe that we will be the only sizeable law firm established in the city," says Sutti.
"We have been very good friends for a number of years with our new partners and associates in Genoa so this is not just a territorial move. We believe that they will easily fit into our existing set-up."
