The European Commission is currently investigating a complaint about restrictive practices at the Bar. This is no surprise: the commission has frequently turned its attention to the legal professions in recent years. When it looked at the rights of establishment issue, the matter was kept running five years longer than necessary. As a result, the agreement reached by the member states disintegrated and they have been arguing ever since. Accusing the Bar of restrictive practices would no doubt produce an equally colourful response from interested parties in the UK. Let us hope that the matter can be concluded in a shorter timespan.
