Washington DC-based Steptoe & Johnson has launched a New York operation on the back of its white collar crime practice.
The firm has bolstered the new office with securities and derivatives litigation partner John Lovi from McDermott Will & Emery, while Evan Barr has rejoined after a long spell in government service as Assistant US Attorney and chief of the major crimes unit of the US Attorney’s Office.
Lovi’s recent cases include the Orange County bankruptcy and disputes involving failed derivative swap transactions in Korea. Initially the new office will focus on white collar crime, with sector head Reid Weingarten being based in New York part time.
Weingarten and partner Mark Hulkower have worked on some of the US’s biggest criminal cases, representing acquitted former Tyco general counsel Mark Belnick and WorldCom co-founder Bernie Ebbers, whose fraud trial begins this month.
Bankruptcy and real estate partner Greg Yates has also relocated to New York.
Other litigation and insurance partners also hope to benefit from the new office.
