CITY FIRM Stephenson Harwood has taken on a commercial property specialist in Madrid as part of its plan to double the size of the operation within two years. Spanish lawyer Javier Ibanez comes from Ernst & Young and has particular expertise in issues relating to shopping centres. Managing partner at the Madrid office Kenneth Bonavia says Ibanez will be joined by a junior, with a shipping law yer and a corporate lawyer expected to follow soon after. In October, Fernando Rodriguez Marin was app-ointed as a partner to head the property department. "We aim to grow by concentrating on what we are good at: corporate and commercial, commercial property, litigation and shipping," says Bonavia. "We hope to become the leading international shipping law firm in Spain by bolstering the department, because it is one area that our international rivals do not really deal with. "At the same time, we are always looking around for the perfect merger partner, but there are not many left."
