Asia Pacific

No. of Lawyers: 76
Offices: 5

Unlike many global law players, this old-school London firm has its very roots in the Asia-Pacific region. Founding partner William Harwood set up the firm in 1875 after having returned from practice in China.

And nearly 140 years on it is in China where the firm is making its most recent waves. In May 2013, the practice flung open the doors on a Beijing office, which is headed by commercial lawyer James Zhang, who is locally qualified and has done prior stints at US giant Baker & McKenzie and pre-merger Londoners Herbert Smith.

According to the firm, the Beijing outpost will target corporate and commercial, international arbitration, finance, marine and international trade and wealth management advice. On launch day, it told The Lawyer that it had launched a recruitment drive for practitioners in maritime law, arbitration and finance.

But the firm is not concentrating its gaze exclusively at China, having been recently busy elsewhere in the region. On the same day as the Beijing office opened, the firm announced an exclusive association deal in Singapore with Virtus Law to add to its existing office in the city-state.

The Asia Pacific profile is an edited version of a full write-up that appears in The Lawyer Asia Pacific 150, a comprehensive analysis of the legal market in the region that ranks the top 100 local firms and leading 50 international players by headcount.
