Stephenson Harwood has recruited a senior assistant from Garrigues Andersen and plans to take on three more lawyers later this year to expand its eight-lawyer Madrid office.
Commercial property specialist Fernando Rodr'guez Mar'n will join as a partner to head the firm's property practice. Kenneth Bonavia, managing partner of the office, said that he planned to recruit a senior assistant to head the litigation department and two lawyers to strengthen the shipping and property teams.
Bonavia said: "Fernando is a recognised player in the international property market and his presence will add considerable weight to a fast growing area of our practice. We are targeting focused areas where we can stand out, over and above the rest."
The office, which was set up in July 1991, has seen a 30 per cent increase in gross fees for this year. It has attracted clients that do not use the firm in the UK including Marks & Spencer, Lloyd's Bank and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya.
In June, Freshfields recruited Fernando Bautista, a Garrigues partner and an Andersen Worldwide partner, to strengthen its expanding 27-lawyer Madrid office. Clifford Chance recruited Garrigues corporate partner Pablo Bieger in Madrid two weeks ago.
