Respected Brussels trade and competition boutique Stanbrook & Hooper has lost a quarter of its lawyers in the space of a month as the firm ends its growth ambitions.
The firm has lost two partners and three associates, including experienced EU partner Scott Crosby, who has left to team up with Renouf & Co, forming a new boutique Renouf Crosby.
Stanbrook’s senior partner Clive Stanbrook QC said: “Our analysis of the current market is that we’re unable to grow to a large size. We had aspirations to do so in the past and don’t have any aspirations do so now.”
Labour law partner Marcel Houben has left with one associate to join the Brussels office of Simmons & Simmons and Stanbrook’s Italian liaison associate is returning to Italy with Hammonds Rossotto. Senior shipping associate Walter Verstrepen has also left to join Stibbe.
Stanbrook added: “The boutiques have almost disappeared in Washington DC and Brussels. The only model that survives is a smallish, focused firm.”
