Squire Sanders & Dempsey merged with Hammonds in January 2011 and the firm was rebranded Squire Sanders in January 2012. The newly formed firm posted a healthy global turnover of $741.6m in 2011.
The firm has made a concerted effort to bulk up its UK offering, which consists of offices in London, Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham. In 2012 it launched a shipping team in London and hired Berwin Leighton Paiser (BLP) project finance head Philippa Chadwick and Wragge & Co banking head Paula Laird to boost its City finance practice. In January 2013 the firm added DLA Piper’s head of regulated procurement Steven Norris as a regulatory partner in its Birmingham office.
Globally, the firm has also continued to expand its international reach. In November 2011 the firm opened an office in Sydney with the hire of a five-strong team, which included Allens M&A partner Campbell Davidson, marking Squire Sander's second Australian outpost following the 2011 launch in Perth with the majority of Minter Ellison’s legacy Perth office.
In February 2012 the firm launched an office in Singapore off the back of the hire of three partners from US rival Bryan Cave in Hong Kong and Singapore. In October, the firm made a further move to boost its presence in Saudi Arabia by bolting on El-Khoury & Partners’ Middle East and North Africa (Mena) practice to grant Squire Sanders with a full integrated office in Riyadh. Squire Sanders has also applied to the Korean Ministry of Justice for permission to open an office in Seoul.
