Squire Sanders has secured a licence from Singapore’s Attorney-General’s Chambers for its launch in the Lion City.
The firm’s Singapore office will be headed by Ignatius Hwang, formerly the Singapore managing partner of Bryan Cave who joined the firm in February 2012 (16 February 2012). He will be supported by a team of three lawyers, also joining from Bryan Cave’s Singapore office.
The new office will initially focus on energy, resources and infrastructure projects with experience in energy, resources and infrastructure. Over time, the firm expects to grow in the area of cross-border transactions and international arbitration.
Squire Sanders chair and global CEO James Maiwurm said in a statement: “Singapore is a major commercial centre in Asia and has one of the most dynamic economies in the region. It provides a gateway to other rapidly growing economies such as Indonesia and India.”
Singapore is the firm’s sixth office in Asia Pacific, following Perth, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong. The next focus will be on its expansion into Korea. The firm has recently submitted a preliminary application for a Seoul office (7 March 2012).
