Squire Sanders raids DLA Piper real estate team in London

DLA Piper is understood to be losing a partner and an associate from its London real estate team as rival Squire Sanders looks to bulk up in the City.

News of the departures of partner Gary Paddison and associate Rachel Orton comes just weeks after the former global co-chair of DLA Piper’s hospitality and leisure team, a group within its real estate practice, Karen Friebe left for Berwin Leighton Paisner (13 November 2013).

It is thought that both Paddison and Orton will join Squire Sanders towards the end of the financial year as partners.

DLA Piper recently named Ian Brierley as UK real estate head just two years after Simon Cookson was brought into the role from Ashurst (11 December 2013). Cookson has returned to a fee-earning role.

Sources said that Squire Sanders is looking to bulk up considerably over the coming year and that more lateral hires were likely.

Earlier this year DLA Piper’s Manchester real estate group lost four commercial property partners to Irwin Mitchell along with a team of 10 lawyers and staff (16 January 2013).
