Squire Sanders moves partner to Moscow

Squire Sanders & Dempsey is continuing the growth of its Moscow office by relocating London-based partner Stephen Nelson to Russia full-time.

Nelson’s corporate practice focuses on transactions in Russia and Central and Eastern Europe and covers a wide range of sectors including energy, telecoms and manufacturing.

The move follows the recent hire of Allen & Overy senior associate Eugenia Bektasheva in the office.

Nelson said the move was dictated primarily by client demand. “The clients have become increasingly more sophisticated and they like to have their lawyers on their doorstep,” he said.

He added that the move would boost the firm’s English law capability in Moscow. The majority of deals in Russia are governed by English law and firms such as Egorov Puginsky Afanasiev & Partners have pledged to build up their English law abilities.
