Squire Patton Boggs picks up Sidley’s last German partner

Squire Patton Boggs has hired Sidley Austin partner Jens Rinze, three months after Sidley confirmed it was closing down its German practice.

Rinze, a capital markets specialist, joins Squire Patton Boggs in Frankfurt. He was previously the last remaining partner at Sidley in Germany.

The office closed down after a number of partner departures prompted the firm to decide that being in Germany was “not imperative” for its clients (9 June 2014).

The hire is the first in Continental Europe for the newly merged Squire Patton Boggs (27 May 2014), although legacy Squire Sanders has been recruiting steadily in financial services over the last year with appointments including Addleshaw Goddard partner Mark Thomas in London (19 August 2013).

However the merged firm has been expanding its international horizons in the months since the combination went live, including bolting on Tokyo corporate boutique Mamiya Law Offices (7 July 2014).

Squire Patton Boggs’ German managing partner Kai Mertens said Rinze’s expertise in securitisation and real estate finance in particular boosted the firm’s capabilities in Frankfurt and Berlin. Mertens added that Rinze would be working to help develop the firm’s presence in the German real estate institutional investment market.

Rinze said his clients would benefit from the firm’s real estate practice in particular, as well as its eastern European offices.
